About

Rebecca Shewmaker is an artist who uses sewing and embroidery techniques to create landscape paintings from fabric and thread. Beginning with hand-dyed cotton fabric, she sews layers of stitches to create a textured image. She grew up in North Texas and is inspired by the beauty and color of the area.

Shewmaker holds a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Visual Arts from Rice University (2006) and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting and Intermedia from Texas Woman’s University (2018), where she also taught Art Appreciation, Watercolor, and Basic Drawing classes. While at Texas Woman’s, she received numerous merit awards, including the Catherine Cloud Edwards Scholarship and the Helen Thomas Perry Endowed Scholarship. She has shown her work in solo and group exhibitions in Texas, Washington, Kentucky, New Jersey, Indiana, and Georgia. She is currently represented by Craighead Green Gallery in Dallas.
